Introduction

Northing ("we", "our", "us") operates the getnorthing.com website and application. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your personal data when you use our service.

Data We Collect

We collect the following information that you provide directly:

  • Account information: email address and display name
  • Profile preferences: primary currency, date of birth, and retirement age
  • Financial data: account names, categories, balances, and metadata you enter (e.g. property addresses, investment tickers, pension providers)
  • Activity data: a log of valuation changes you make within the app

We also collect first-party product analytics to understand how the service is used and to improve it. These are events recorded against your account — for example, when you sign up, complete onboarding, view an upgrade prompt, start checkout, start a subscription, or close a month. We do not use third-party advertising or tracking analytics, and we do not build advertising profiles.

How We Use Your Data

Your data is used solely to provide and improve the Northing service, including:

  • Displaying your financial accounts, net worth, and projections
  • Fetching live prices for investments you have added
  • Recording daily snapshots of your account values
  • Generating optional AI-assisted insights, advice, and CSV-import suggestions (see "AI Features" below)
  • Processing payments for paid subscriptions and sending you transactional and optional digest emails
  • Authenticating your identity and securing your account

AI Features

Northing offers optional AI-assisted features: the AI Advisor, automatically generated insights, and CSV-import column mapping. When you use these features, the relevant financial data is sent to our AI provider, Anthropic, to generate the response you requested:

  • AI Advisor — your profile summary, account names and balances, net-worth history, projection settings, and goals are sent so the assistant can answer using your actual data.
  • Insights — summary figures such as your net worth and milestone thresholds are sent to generate short written insights.
  • CSV import — your spreadsheet column headers and a small sample of rows are sent so columns can be mapped to the correct fields.

This data is processed only to generate output for you. Anthropic does not use Northing API data to train its models.

AI features are optional. You can turn them off at any time in Settings, which disables these features in the app and stops any of your data being sent to Anthropic.

Data Storage & Security

Your data is stored in a Supabase-hosted PostgreSQL database with encryption at rest. Authentication is handled by Supabase Auth with secure, HTTP-only session tokens. All connections are encrypted in transit via TLS.

Third-Party Services & Sub-processors

We share data only with the sub-processors listed below, and solely to operate the service. We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it for advertising.

  • Supabase — database hosting and authentication (stores your account and financial data)
  • Vercel — application hosting
  • Yahoo Finance / CoinGecko — live price data for investments (only ticker symbols are sent; no personal data)
  • Anthropic — AI provider for the optional AI Advisor, insights, and CSV-import mapping (processes financial data to generate output; not used to train models — see "AI Features")
  • Stripe — payment processing for paid subscriptions (receives your email address and billing details)
  • Resend — transactional and optional digest email delivery (receives your email address and summary figures included in the email)

Cookies

Northing uses only essential session cookies required for authentication. We do not use tracking cookies, advertising cookies, or third-party analytics cookies.

Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Export your data (available via the CSV export feature)
  • Request correction of inaccurate data
  • Delete your account and all associated data, at any time, from Settings
